In a lead-acid battery put on charge the lead sulfate changes to lead dioxide in the case of positive plates and spongy lead in the case of negative plates.
A lead-acid battery is a battery in which the electrolyte also takes part in the reaction. Hence you observe that the specific gravity of sulphuric acid which is used as an electrolyte change. The specific gravity reduces as the battery is being discharged & the specific gravity increases as the battery are charged.
